Before "The Best of Me" was chosen as the first single, Mýa thought Lie Detector should have been the first single because it was different. Commenting further saying, no young R&B artist had really tapped into reggae. Ironically, though "The Best of Me" became the first single because it was one of the last songs recorded. The Best of Me is an uptempo tune with "a lot of meanings", says Mýa. The song talks about not letting the heat of the moment get to you, whether you're in a relationship or not; the physical can be really overwhelming and manipulative at times.[1]
"The Best of Me" debuted at number eighty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at number fifty in its 6th week. It spent 2 weeks at number fifty before descending on the chart and 17 consecutive weeks on the chart altogether. It is the first single released by Mýa that failed to become a top forty hit. The single became a top forty hit on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart peaking at number fourteen in its 8th week and Mýa's fourth consecutive top forty hit (as a lead artist) on the chart.
Internationally, the single was a moderate success reaching the top forty in Germany.
